Setting Up a Flash/USB Drive with Portable Applications
Unfortunately, we will not be able to install software in our temporary classrooms. This means that we won’t have access to Firefox, HomeSite, the Adobe CS3 Suite, and FTP software. To overcome this hurdle, we will install some portable applications on Flash/USB drives to use while we are in transition.
PortableApps.com, has free versions of some of the applications that we use in class that will work on Flash/USB drives. We will install the following applications on our Flash drives:
Firefox and Firefox extensions for Web developers
NotePad++ (to replace HomeSite)
KompoZer (to replace HomeSite)
GIMP (to replace Photoshop)
Filezilla (to replace WS_FTP)
All of these applications are available @ http://portableapps.com/apps.
Will review the process of how to install these applications on your Flash drive in class. In case you miss the workshop, I’ve created a Flash movie with the installation instructions.
To run your portable application open My Computer by clicking Start > My Computer. Look for the removable drive on the list of drives and devices; the portable drive will typically be drive E: on our classroom computers. Double click the removable drive icon and then double click the folder FirefoxPortable. With the FirefoxPortable folder open look for the file FirefoxPortable.exe and double click the file and Firefox portable will run. Here is a Flash movie for running portable applications from a Flash drive.
Once FirefoxPortable is running you can install Firefox extensions as you normally would.
Please install the following portable applications on your Flash drives:
Firefox and Firefox extensions for Web developers
NotePad++ (to replace HomeSite)
KompoZer (to replace HomeSite)
GIMP (to replace Photoshop)
Filezilla (to replace WS_FTP)
