Resources for Designing for Handheld Devices
It is very important for you to develop an understanding of designing for handhelds. The book that we are currently using in class is rather “sparse” on the subject. I have pulled together some resources for handheld devices and CSS.
- Stylesheets for handheld devices
- The End-All Guide to Small-Screen Web-Dev
- Mobile Web Design ~ The Series
- Pocket-Sized Design: Taking Your Website to the Small Screen
- Mobile CSS @ Mezzoblue
- Mobile CSS First Steps
- WebmasterWorld Discussion
- HTMLDog Discussion and Mobile CSS is a Reality
- Resources for handheld development at the W3C
- MacEdition Guide to CSS2 Support in PDA/Handheld Browsers
- Mobile Profile
- The Web, Only Smaller…
- Handheld Stylesheets
- Print CSS, Mobile Design
When you are ready to test your handheld CSS file you can use the Opera browser to test in Small Screen view. Opera is installed on the instructor workstation. Open the XHTML file in Opera and click View > Small Screen or press Shift+F11. You should also try to test your handheld.css on a variety of handheld devices. The Opera web site also has a lot tips on developing for small screen devices and authoring for small screen rendering.
