Cheatsheets and Other Resources for New Students

Print and review the welcome to class letter (Word document format), this contains a lot of helpful information about class.

Visit and explore the classroom web site at http://pclab.cccoe.k12.ca.us/. The classroom web site includes all of the assignment sheets, project information, and other relevant class materials.

Visit and explore http://www.tinkertech.net/. Here you will find tutorials related to class and helpful web sites related to web design.

Using Firefox – Firefox is a web browser that we use extensively in class. You can customize Firefox in the classroom by adding extensions. I would recommend installing the following extensions for use in class: Web Developer Toolbar, HTML Validator with Tidy, Edit CSS, ColorZilla, and Sage. Instructions and download links for installing extensions are on the Firefox tutorial.

del.icio.us – An online bookmark/favorites manager. Use del.icio.us to bookmark web design related sites so you can access them in class and at home. In order to use del.icio.us in the classroom you will have to use the Firefox web browser. Open Firefox and register for del.icio.us (after registering you will receive a confirmation email; you must activate your account by clicking the link in the email). Once you are registered you can login. When you first login you should see a section on the About page called Bookmarklets which contains four links. Drag the second link, post to del.icio.us, to the Bookmarks toolbar (below the Navigation toolbar) in Firefox. When you find a page/site you want to bookmark, click the post to del.icio.us link in the Bookmarks toolbar and complete the necessary form items.

For some reason the customizing the Internet Explorer bar is not working in the class. If you want to use Internet Explorer at home you need to be sure that your toolbars are unlocked by clicking View > Toolbars and uncheck Lock the Toolbars. You will then be able to drag the post to del.icio.us bookmarklet to the Links bar in Internet Explorer.

SizeFactory XHTML Cheetsheet – XHTML Cheatsheet, most common XHTML code.

Making Documents XHTML Compliant – Basic steps to creating XHTML compliant documents.

Cascading Style Cheatsheet – Most Useful CSS Properties with Examples – A handy reference, good to bookmark and print.
