The Issue of Cell Phones in Class
It seems that on a daily basis we can count on a student’s cell phone loudly ringing several times during class. Class is further disrupted by the phone being answered with a loud “Hello” in the middle of the room. This has become a joke in class with students and I threatening to collect a dollar for each class disruption; this has not deterred anyone.
Many students are annoyed and are complaining about the frequent disruptions to class. A phone ringing in class breaks concentration and disrupts the learning process. We need to keep in mind that many people attend classes so that they have a quiet place they can study without the constant interruptions of home life. It is very important that the classroom atmosphere is conducive to learning; this means minimal interruptions and a quiet atmosphere. Cell phones playing Bach are not conducive to the desired atmosphere.
While I will not ban cell phones from the classroom entirely because they are necessary in the case of an emergency; phones MUST be turned off or set to silent mode during class. In the event your device goes off in class, you will be asked to leave the classroom for that day, and given an absence.
